The Octagonal tower of Golden Teak
File: DB05_2354
The Vimanmek Palace was built in 1900 entirely out of golden teak without the use of a single nail. It had the first light bulb in Thailand and the first indoor plumbing.
This favorite palace of King Rama V contains 31 rooms furnished in great detail. The private apartment of King Rama V was situated in the octagonal tower. When the King died his successor lived in a newer grander Palace and the Golden teak mansion was used as a store room.
In 1982 Queen Sirikit decided to restore the palace to its full splendour and open it to the public displaying the collection of artefacts and furniture collected by King Rama V from all over the world.
