Pictures of Turkey

preview

This is a selection of pictures of Turkey I took on a short trip to Istanbul and Goreme in central Anatolia. I hope you like these first pictures of Turkey I selected for this page.

We arrived with easy jet and stayed first a couple of days in Istanbul having visited Istanbul twice over ten years ago I was planning not to concentrate so much on the tourist spots.

Galata Bridge Istanbul Turkey
Galata Bridge - Istanbul

This view of the Galata bridge is taken from the roof of one of the old Caravanserais. The Galata bridge connecting Sultanahmet with Galata is known for the hundreds of fisherman who daily catch fish with their fishing rods from this bridge which gives this area a nice atmosphere. The picture is taken with a 70-200 f2.8 lens which nicely compressed the view.

Istanbul Fish market
The fish market next to the bridge is unavoidable not only because of the smell but because of some nice photo opportunities. The picture left was taken with a Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro lens.

Simit seller Istanbul

I love this kind of crops because it really
emphasizes the pattern of a subject like
these fish.

The Simit seller is a typical Turkeys street scene. Early in the morning they
appear everywhere and do good business.

Caravanserai IstanbulThe Caravanserais in Turkey are hot spots for small businesses in making jewelery and weaving . These places are very old and full of character.

I wanted to find 'Valide Han' a caravanserai I visited over 10 years ago, where I took one of my favorite pictures on Kodachrome of an elderly man weaving on a very noisy loom.

Although we could hear the looms around us it took a while to find Valide Han in the maze of small streets.

But as we could not find any looms accessible to take pictures we explored the roof and the corridors which is always good for some nice photography.

To escape the busy city we took a night bus to Goreme in Cappadocia which is Central Anatolia. The bright weather with freezing temperatures made for some good walking.

Lock Goreme TurkeyThe Early morning light was great for exploring the small streets of Goreme. Normally flooded with tourists but in the winter it is very quiet and pleasant.

in the streets of Goreme in the early morning light.

I love this picture of this wooden door taken with Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro lens. It shows the great detail of the weathered wood with the ancient lock.

During the time we visited Goreme we spend the days exploring the surrounding valleys.

One of walks went past sunset point where we had a great view of mount Erciyes, central Anatolia's highest volcano in the last light of the day.
