Formerly Middlesex County Pauper Lunatic Asylum at Colney Hatch later London County Friern Hospital founded in 1849 Opened in July 1851 and closed in April 1993.

From 1811 until 1948 the Counties of England Wales and Scotland provided their own system of custody and care and treatment for the Mentally Ill People. When it was opened in 1851 Colney Hatch was the largest asylum in Europe.
